But I'm staying a mile or so from the nearest public road and realised that was the problem.

Most navigation systems give you a compass bearing if there's no track to follow, or instruct you to find the 'nearest digitised road' or similar. Reporting a 'route navigation error' is the least helpful message.
Thanks for the update.

That's very interesting.
I'm picturing something like your location in a country house with a long, private avenue - so "cut off" from public roads?
Does the unit normally have a "bring to start of route" feature?
Was it possible to zoom out and see your planned route or did the message obscure everything?
(No rush to answer ^_^- enjoy the cycling)

Not nice to be abroad and lose your navigation so glad all is good for you now.
