Every time I post something now, I get asked what is inside the parcel and more specifically, are there any batteries.
Firstly, I don't like to say what's inside! Secondly, do RM no longer ship anything with a battery in it?

It seems to me like Royal Mail are trying very hard to turn more people away to the ever-growing number of courier companies. RM parcel prices are insane if it's over 1kg and thicker than 8cm!

There are restrictions on what they'll carry. See http://www.royalmail.com/personal/help-and-support/Tell-me-about-Restricted-Goods, and follow links to prohibited goods too.

Its not got anything to do with RM. Its new Aviation rules that prohibit carrying of quite a lot of items.
See the news about lithium batteries http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-...en-trumping-risk-in-aircraft-battery-use.html
Just one example.

You can still send lithium batteries within the uk following certain rules.
I guess other peoples safety does not concern you

Those rules apply to all carriers

The rules actually came in in January. It's not that new, so in a sense what the OP was getting at was true and in a sense what you were saying was in a sense misleading.

It is just understandable after a dangerous fire earlier in the year after more rules were brought in that there would be a beat up on existing rules.

The RM beat up I can see creating some confusion and arguments particularly with regards to whether batteries are connected to a device and new or not. Restrictions on lithium batteries are eminently sensible, much heavier restrictions and arguments about a small number of NiMH batteries connected to devices seems much less justifiable.

Over the past two weeks I've had 5 "something for you" cards left saying the item couldn't be delivered even though I was in at the times the post man put on said cards and so I've had to travel half way across Manchester to get them, even though I've paid for them to be delivered to my house. The Royal Mail is a farce.

well, I did some temp work for Royal Mail several years ago. My job was to delivery bags of mail, mainly small letters. Stuffed amongst all the letters were loads of 'sorry I missed you' cards with names/addresses on them - I delivered those along with all the letters, there was no attempt to delivery the parcels, from what I could see!!!

I sent a birthday card to my mum last week. I'm much more into electronic mail than bog standard analogue mail so its not something I do often. A first class stamp cost 60p! Bleeding 'eck it was 29p last time I bought one, and its not even privatised yet. I was going to get her a present but with increases like that the card was the present^_^

And another RM thing thats new to me was a text, I don't recall asking for one so I guess its something in the default settings. I ordered some new cranks last Friday, yesterday I got a text in the morning saying 'we have your item and will try and deliver it today' - And then an hour later the item arrived, about an hour after that I got another text saying 'your item has been delivered'. Both seemed a bit pointless really. In relation to the first text I just did standard delivery so who else would have it? And regarding the second text I know it has been delivered I answered the door and signed for it:huh:

I bought some One Shot drain cleaner from an online supplier a couple of months ago. It was sent by Royal Mail. It's one litre of 91% concentrated sulphuric acid.

And its a prohibited item, so should not be sent.

Corrosive substances

Substances which can cause severe damage to living tissue, other freight or transport by its chemical action are prohibited including aluminium chloride, caustic soda, corrosive cleaning fluid, dyes, acids, corrosive paint and rust removers, mercury and gallium metal.

Suprised they send them, but then again i'm not either.

I get emails off Wiggle to say when an item has been ordered, processed, delivered to my local Collect+ store (with pick up code), and it's been picked up.

I like this much more than text messages (mobile is internet enabled and configured for email) and lets me know where the item is in the chain of getting from Wiggle to me.

Wiggle use someone called Yodel...?

Posted two parcels on 6th December here in Derry. The larger and heavier of the two was a Christmas present for a friend who lives in Vienna. I posted it well in advance so it would get there on time (and skinflint wanted to send it cheapest way possible!). The other was a present for my sister who lives in the SE of England which I also posted early to avoid a return trip to the PO and it was posted first class as there was very little difference between 1st and 2nd class price.

The Austrian one was delivered last Tuesday 10th. My sister has just sent me a text message to thank me for her present that arrived this morning! Last time I looked, England was a lot closer to Northern Ireland than Vienna:wacko:
