i've been commuting day in day out for 2 and a half years with a eurohike rucksack from millets. it's still in very good condition and has room for lots of stuff (i've even had a laptop in it) and is not uncomfortable to wear on the bike. i'd recommend having a look.

I have a Eurohike rucksack (18 litres I think) which I used to use for commuting. Comfortable, padded back, chest strap, plenty of room. It also looks pretty "cool" too. Panniers have relegated it back to it's original hiking function.

I bought one of these this week £12.50 from Aldgate luggage shop opposite Aldgate underground station. Airflow back and 15 Lts. Plenty of choice off Middlesex Street for £5. Depends if you want something cheap which does the job or spend a fortune on the dogs bits and have some scrote at school nick it or write all over it.

my problem with rucksack is that when you sweat, the straps get wet and thas uncomfortable. And if its raining your waterproof solves this but then you have to put a cover on the rucksack, and the straps still get wet.
saying that, if i end up carrying anymore kit on winter rides i may start using one of my rucksacks too!

I've used a Karrimor 25 litre from Millets for about 6 years now with no problems, although once when it was full someone asked me if I was going parachuting! I can get everything I need for work in it, food box, bag of bits and pieces, and my workclothes plus I can slip a pair of overshoes in the hydration bag pocket. On the outside theres another pocket which is ideal for spares and arm + leg warmers and a couple of sidepockets to carry rainwear. And its got a built in waterproof cover.

How about a courier bag, a kind of halfway house, and some of them are really cool looking. I use a Specialised one for carrying stuff at work,

Yep my husband has one similar to this http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/briefcase-bag-ec008413 which he wears day in day out on his commute and he says it's really comfy.

Panniers for me though!
