Need a new bag for commuting purposes.

Needs to carry a laptop, shirt, shoes and the normal basics - pump, tools.

Anyone have any suggestions ?

Deuter have a number of daysacs designed for such a role (e.g. at http://www.outdoorgb.com/c/deuter_daypacks/).

The other day I was in a sportsdirect store in London and noticed they had a Karrimor 28 for £9.99. It looked very good for the money, and had a sort of divider inside to separate laptops/files from everything else. It's also available via their website.

Cant say I would like to have my laptop been bashed around in my panniers

Then pack it properly you silly person!

More seriously - a bit of thought when packing anything is what is required. MrWC has transported a laptop on a rack using a laptop carrier and it was this: fine. No damage, no problems. And this was using a basic laptop carrier from Lidl. That's the cheapskate end of the market - and there's always the expensive end as in

Does your commute take you down Snowdon or something? In e.g. a slim neoprene sleeve it'll be perfectly fine. I have both a laptop rucksack and laptop pannier, and when on the bike the pannier is more pleasant to carry by far. Wafflycat has it right.
