I don’t like it. It was clearly an accident, but that’s now the interpretation of the law. Even accidental contact can result in a red card. It does seem somewhat unfair to penalise a player for that.

It is in line with the laws and consistent with the bunker review panel. My main gripe is that the decision is arguably inconsistent with a number of others already this RWC. Even if there were subtle differences in the offences, there were small margins that are grossly amplified by the laws.

But the rules are basically the same as in a lineout (just with harsher penalties now); you can challenge for the ball, you just can't tackle an airborne player.

More to do with rest time. Previous World Cups have tried to spread the games around the week, but the minor nations have complained that their games are scheduled for mid-week, which gives the teams without stronger and deeper squads less recovery time. So they then have the choice of focusing on games against the bigger teams, which they will probably lose, or focusing the best players and adequate recovery time on the games they might win, and get a humiliating thrashing against the big sides. Rugby is not a game where you can play two games a week, like you can in football.

It is supposedly more about making sure that teams don't have to play games to close together. They should always have at least 6 days between matches with this schedule.

Which is more for the benefit of the smaller teams without deep squads.

Rugby is not a game where you can play two games a week, like you can in football.

This 100%. The players bodies couldn’t take it. When I used to play at lowly amateur level it would take most of the week to recover. These guys are hitting far harder than me.

Probably best to keep all games concentrated over the weekends, then it’s fair to everyone for the knockout stages. Which are also weekend games.

totally get the rest days side of it and at least there's a game tonight should be a right old mauling. Last RWC game I went to see was Eng v Uruguay at the Etihad, that year we didn't get out of the group

Just turned on ITV hd to find that tonight's game isn't being shown there, only on ITV4 or ITV X
ITV4 picture is crap, low resolution.
ITV X has reasonable picture but not as good as HD and prone to buffering at important moments.
Same for ABs game tomorrow night.
Surely not too much to expect the 'tier 1' teams games to be shown on the main channel in HD (even the ones against 'tier2' teams)?

This head contact business in rugby these days is a total farce.
Accidental clash of heads: penalty, red card and two match ban.
Deliberate shoulder charge to head: penalty, yellow card and nothing more.
