Running late... don't sweat it!

I hate getting up in the morning, and have often found myself in a rush and running late for work first thing in the morning. I've recently discovered that if I'm running late it's actually quicker for me to slow down on the way in rather than speed up! By keeping my 7 mile commute low intensity enough to not break a sweat I can arrive at work 5-8 minutes later than if I bomb it all the way, but save 10-15 minutes by just getting changed rather than having to take a shower to get rid of sweat.

More haste less speed wins the day again!

It's a lazy (and un-washed) man's world!

I do sometimes have a shower, but the extra weight to carry puts me off sometimes. However I have found that I dont seem to sweat much after the ride in (7 miles) even when really pushing.

Do some people just sweat less? even at the gym I'm not one of those guys with a massive V sweat on front and back of tshirt!

I take my time and I don't really break sweat on the way to work. 6 miles, but then, it is mostly downhill... The journey home is quite a different story.

I recently reverted to using a backpack after years of using panniers and was expecting the 'sweaty back' syndrome to resurface, but it hasn't thus far. Taking it steady seems to do the trick.

im soon to take my first journey to work in a week or so, when i pick up my bike on our cycle to work scheme. My ride is about 10miles. There is a shower at work but i work in a car enviroment so even if i did shower im only gonna kick up a stink a few hours later or so!

so 'taking it easy' seems like a good idea to me

The other thing to think about is wearing the right clothes. Very easy to get sweaty even going slowly if you have too many layers on for the conditions. I found that out when I started commuting and soon shed a lot of unnecessary kit.

I always shower; whether I'd bombed it in or took it easy...

Can't be doing with 'stinkies' in the office

I think it's true that some people just sweat more than others. I try to wear as little kit as I can get away with, but with an option available to make it a little warmer if needs be (like a gillet in my pocket or something). I don't find myself stinking after a non-sweaty ride - maybe others beg to differ, but if they do, then they don't beg loud enough! Anyway I always shower upon arriving home whether I've showered in the morning or not, so I don't think I have any personal hygiene issues...

Having a shower at work saves a fortune in electricity bills and also, 'if you don't use it, they will take it away'.

If I'm late I take the shorter (busier) route. It's about 7-8 minutes quicker but carries far more traffic.

That gives me an incentive to get up early to enjoy the semi-rural route

It's a strange world, I always ride easy in normal clothes and I have never needed to shower or change at work, my ride in is six and a half miles and takes about twenty five minutes. Over the last couple of weeks I've been doing some low intensity training stuff with a heart monitor and I've slowed right down, half an hour for the six and a half miles, and suddenly I'm having to be careful as I'm tending to work up a sweat. Its strange, I thought less effort less likely to get sweated up.

I always basin wash before setting off and again at the other end of the 9 miles, there are no showers at work but at least a disabled bog thank god! I am always sweaty and in need of a change no matter how easy I take it. After getting home in the evening I treat myself to a shower
