Ideally, you're supposed to run on the right hand side of the lane, facing traffic, but I always tended to be on whatever side had the best view of traffic, and they of me.

Indeed the Highway code says as much: "it may be safer to cross the road well before a sharp right-hand bend so that oncoming traffic has a better chance of seeing you"

By implication that suggests that you run/walk facing the traffic normally. I used to hike a lot and we always walked on the right, apart from anything else, if an oncoming drover doesn't start to pull out as he nears you, can step off the road to avoid being hit.

I used to run a lot - commuted 5 miles each way, and then did some long runs at weekends. If there was an opportunity, I would run on the road. The problem with the pavement is the continual up and down for drive ways. It might seem a tiny amount, but you lose your rhythm. In addition, the surface is typically poorer than the road.

A lot of running clubs are even named <Wherever> Road Runners, its quite popular especially around villages I think

I run a fair bit down residential roads and when I was training distance on country lanes. Either where the pavement was non-existant or terrible. Its actually quite similar to expecting cyclists to always use cycle facilities, even though some are awful.
