Sad conversation with wobbly cyclist

This happened a couple of months ago but I just wanted to share it. I was cycling home along the Ruckholt one-way in Leyton which is not a pleasant narrow road with a death-trap-door-zone cycle lane which I avoid by sticking to primary. I found myself behind a male cyclist who was clearly nervous, unconfident and a bit wobbly! He tootled along quite hesitantly and I was behind a good bike’s length and noticed he kept looking over his shoulder to me. As the traffic stopped at lights we both slowly edge up the cycle lane as there was plenty of space although he was struggling a bit with the space there was. We reach a lorry who’s wheels were on the cycle lane. I stopped and so did he, still looking occassionaly over his shoulder. He was looking up the inside and started to edge up.

Paraphrasing….

I told him “Don’t go on my account, I’m stopping here anyway”

Him “Phew, didn’t want to go up there as it looked a squeeze but saw you behind me”

Me “So what, do what you feel comfortable with not what the others do”

Him “I’ve only been riding a few weeks and I sometimes get loads of abuse from other cyclists in central London so I assume I’m doing something wrong if not pushing through”

Me “Ignore those ***holes and don’t ever do anything you don’t feel is safe. If it slows them down, tough, they’ll just have to wait until it’s safe to pass you”

Him “Thank you”

So, if you’re ever one of these cyclists that bully the unconfident into doing something you find easy but they don’t, please bog off. The reason I’m saying this is that my wife is toying with the idea of commuting into central London. She is a very wobbly cyclist and my fear is that she will be pushed into riding into situations she feels isn’t safe by arrogant cyclists.

That is all, thank you.

Good post.
I have no time at all for ignorant, pushy cyclists.

Usually I park myself directly behind the vehicle in front and leave a gap behind me for other cyclists to pass if I don't want to filter. Then it is up to them if they want to squeeze past a HGV, not my problem.

Just requires a bit of forward planning to slot into a gap behind traffic.

There really are some brain dead d1cks out there :banghead:

What kind of idiot would berate another cyclist for NOT taking chances? We all read the sad reports of cyclists that have been trapped to the left of HGVs with horrific consequences. These jerks need taking down a dark alley and beating senseless until they understand :cursing:

Thanks for sharing this Marky, we all need to be aware that our abilities, experience and comfort zones are not the same as other riders and we have to be careful not to give the impression that our way is the only way!

With the sheer amount of cyclists in London, (It can be anything up to 40-50 cyclists at certain junctions) it is a regular occurrence sad to say.
You only have to watch some of Gaz' video's to see.

I once waited behind a lorry, a guy behind me got angry and said "that sort of hesitation will get you killed", and proceeded to speed up the inside of the lorry.
It's a very common thing in London to see other cyclists squeeze the space of others around them.
(forget about the helmet comment, it's a red herring here)

...please do not derail....
Sorry, but maybe not as off topic as it seems.

How are all these unconfident, wobbly, inexperienced new cyclists supposed to feel when they have some lycra clad animal raging at them for being such a fool as to risk not wearing a helmet? My god, they had better get with it and do what the cycling crowd do, and if that means pushing up the left of an HGV truck or running a red light then so be it......

EDIT: Tell you what, maybe I shouldn't take up cycling at all? It's just too dangerous.

Indeed.
I have told this story before.
Approaching a roundabout. A couple of us stopped behind a left indicating lorry. Another cyclist edged his way through and started to go up the inside. I shouted at him to stop. Fortunately he did. I said 'that's how cyclists die', his reply.... 'Who are you? My mother'. Sometimes there really is no telling people.

Embarrassment makes people say stupid things sometimes. Not everyone is strong enough to admit there and then that they were wrong. Let's hope he went away and thought about it later.

I sincerely hope so, but from his attitude I think not.

I do however find it difficult not to be annoyed by cyclists blatantly taking risks, jumping lights, no helmet, undertaking before a left turn etc.
......I have no right to judge - I just think it is an unnecessary risk. I don't scorn them, I make no judgement,....

I think you just did?

Sorry, I'll drop it now because it is an important thread that deserves debate without getting sidetracked (or even worse, moved to the helmets debate section )
