saddle fore/aft position?

Don't know if this has come up before, please redirect me to thread if it has.
I ve watched a few youtube tutorials recently regarding the saddle position not the height just the fore/aft pos the
tutorials all use a piece of string with a weight attached or a plumb bob to gauge the right saddle position ,im not sure how accurate this is or if any of you folks swear by this method.I haven t tried it yet but with the naked eye the front of my knee is not near the front of the crankarm where they recommend it should be.
thanks

sorry
the tutorials I watched say that if you place the string on the front of the knee the weighted end should be level with the front of the crankarm
when you hold the pedals at the 3oclock and 9 oclock pos if they don't line up your saddle setup is wrong
just wanted to know if this is bolloney or not,

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Make sure your bike is on a really level surface and move the cranks so that they are at the 3/9 oclock position. Hold a long spirit level vertical against the centre of* the leading pedal spindle and mark the point where the level crosses the top tube with tape. This will give you a fairly accurate starting point for you to assess KOPS while you ride.

If you are using this rule of thumb (and that is exactly what it is), you are looking for the string to be in line with the centre of the pedal spindle, not the front of the crank arm, which is probably a 10+mm further forward of the pedal spindle.
