1.5m is "almost the width of a car"? I didn't think you drove a Smart fortwo (1.65m). A Mondeo is 1.85, over a foot wider. The "mid-size" Honda Passport is 2m. The notorious Range Rover Sport is 2.1m.

And actually, on the pictured road, there's every point asking for more: to give 1.5m clearance, they need to be at least partly in the other lane, so they need it to be clear of oncoming traffic, so they might as well go completely onto the other side and give me the whole lane. So the signs should say something like "CHANGE LANE FULLY TO OVERTAKE CYCLISTS"!
How much room would you expect a car to be given?
Would it involve the overtaking vehicle to cross into the opposite lane.

You have to remember that you shouldn't ride in the gutter, take a strong primary(claim your lane).

You are on a legal road vehicle, and others need to be reminded of that fact. Why accept second best, and cower in the gutter.

Agreed. A bit like the A470 Merthyr to Brecon where speeds are often around 60mph.
Personally avoid this road as much as possible and find alternatives, longer but a lot safer

(Reactivating an old thread but wasn't worth starting another "passing distance" thread"
Everybody that cycles in France has seen the normal ones about sharing the road, passing distance but this one goes a bit further than most I've seen. From Deux-Sèvres (France) I thought effective. Reminds drivers of the minimum distance and that there is a 3 point penalty (and "it's the law as in Art. reference).
