For some reason it has stopped alerting me with sound when I get a text.
I have gone into settings and cannot find a reason i.e. the 'silent' button isn't ticked. I have tried selecting a new alert sound.........it would normally make that noise so you can decide if it's what you want.....no sound comes !!
The vibration is still working.
I have gone through all the settings, hoping for some inspiration, but cannot see anything that gives me hope.
Any advice appreciated

Try a reboot if all else fails, cures 99% of most problems with technology :okay:

If that fails try impact engineering.

Mrs PK dropped her iPad. Screen showed nothing but a blank screen with a slightly less dark band moving up continously. None of buttons worked. Quick Google revealed it is a common problem with a proven solution.
"Place iPad face down on knees and slap firmly on the back."
Worked first slap.

Ignorance showing here....how do I reboot?
I have switched off and on with no result.
You've already done it then, I just restart mine every now and then when it starts to slow down or misbehave, works every time.

I am starting to lose a bit of faith in Samsung though, phone and tablet are both quite laggy now.

Have you tried the settings in messages rather than general settings?
Click on the messages icon,
then click on the three dots in the top right corner,
then click on settings
scroll down to notifications.

If you hold the power button you should get the option to switch off, if you then hold it for 5 seconds when powering up you should get the boot screen, you can factory reset, or just boot as normal.
I take it when you initially swipe down from the top the Sound icon isn't crossed out, this is also assuming it is the same as an S5
