I'd just point out to those advocating sardines, that fish isn't vegetarian. I know the OP specified no meat -- fish is a form of meat. It's fishmeat.

Cheese and a good fruity chutney on malted brown or, if you can get it, walnut and date bread. Round lettuce works in that quite nicely.

Thinly sliced red onion with hummus and black olives on pumpernickel.

Chilli and garlic-roasted butternut squash with either rocket pesto or hummus and shredded little gem lettuce in a pitta bread.

There are a variety of pates and pastes to be made from beans and/or nuts.

Quorn bacon with mayonnaise, walnuts and watercress.

Cheese & Onion - preferably Walkers.

ooh yes, a crisp sandwich! But it must be made fresh, as I found out as a child when I requested one in a packed lunch, and the marg turned the crisps into mere soft slices of potato.

Take a bag of crisps, and ready buttered bread, preferably thick sliced white.

Some vegetarians do not consider fish meat as meat, even though it is. I knew a "veggie" that ate chicken and got very upset when their contradiction was pointed out and I have known several that do eat fish/seafood, prawns are consider sea insects.

Then they're not vegetarians.

The "veg" in vegetarian means "vegetable". In the "animal, vegetable or mineral" game, fish, prawns, spiders, caterpillars, mealy worms, beetles, rabbits, cows, whales, chickens and lammergeiers are all "animal". I more often cook and eat vegetarian and even vegan food than I do omnivorous, but I myself am not vegetarian and wouldn't describe myself as such.

I think the word for a fish-eating vegetarian is "piscitarian" and the word for a chicken-, prawn- and sausage-eating vegetarian is "inaccurate" .

"piscitarian"

That is something I learnt from watching an episode of "Come Dine With Me" a few months ago.

There's a gap in the market for Quorn sardines!

No there isn't. Eat sardines, or be veggie, don't fanny about.

We did find a box in the recycling the other day for "Quorn fishcakes". Eh?

BTW, many restaurants in France really do thing veggies eat fish, I've toured with a couple who were normally veggie, but for the sake of international relations and variety would eat fish - otherwise if was cheese ommlette every night, and the occasional black look from waitresses.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a French vegan, they've all been shot.

Quite right, its same as alcohol free beer, how can you call it beer if after a lot of swift one's it does not make you feel like falling over. You either drink lemonade or beer, don't pretend

I don't touch quorn, but nearest I get to eating meat is jelly babies.

But there again I'm not a vegetarian, I'm just in a stupid mood, too much sun on my ride today I think. Off to play bowls now, match night.

You know what's nice, a lettuce sandwich. Loads of fresh new lettuce (from the garden if your lucky) crammed into fresh sliced bread with a splurge of Mayo.
