My biggest peeve with the damn things is that they don't seem to be intelligent enough to determine the suitability of the road for the vehicle that you're driving. I live on a narrow, residential street and we regularly get lorry drivers following their satnavs and thundering down our road, squeezing past parked cars by inches, just using our road as a thoroughfare, when they'd be better off taking the trunk route.

The satnav data set comes in lots of forms. There is a version for HGVs which excludes unsuitable roads. Your road is fair game unless there is a traffic order restricting axle weights.

I don't have a dedicated satnav. I don't see the point as any good mobile phone has gps installed.

I use my blackberry to help navigate. It's much easier to carry than a map, plus I can google for a decent restaurant on the way.

only really use them for planning of time/distances now. much prefer an OS Road map and the landranger or explorer foer the destinations locale. made finding last weeks campsite a doddle.

Sat Navs don't do Bristol to Wookey very well though. would have took us on a magical mystery tour through Bristol if I didn't use my noodle and read a map. intelligent ones that learn the routes you as a local take would be an advantage, although I think the one in the Jeep does this asit no longer sends us on a circuituos route through London from West East anymore it send us round the M25.

If someone is a complete idiot then a sat nav's not going to save the day.
I mean, if you're going to drive along a railway line / footpath / river 'because the sat nav told me to' then I do wonder if you should be let out on your own!!

Apologies, I didnt mean to phrase it as though I wanted an argument, sorry if thats how it came across. Perhaps I should have wonrded it .."there is ONEthing wrong with satnavs"

I may try that zoom button...I knew it was there for a reason!

No probs.

On my Garmin one tap on the route screen converts to overhead map view with North at the top by default. I can then zoom out to get a look at where in the country the route takes me to.
It has, on a few occasions, let me know that it is directing me to the wrong place (of the same name) so I could re direct it to the right place. Also I get to see if the route takes a me on a road I know to be congested or closed, or is unsuitable for the vehicle.

It is just an electronic map, a tool with functions to learn to use.

Mine has been gagged (silenced) as it keeps telling me that a section of Motorway is 50mph when it evidently isn't anymore. Also it sometimes attempts to direct me off a sliproad, around the roundabout and back on again! I choose to ignore it as I will look ahead to see where it wants me to go in general.

I have a vision of your satnav, with a gaffer tape gag round it, going "mmmmm, mmmmm mmmm mmmmmmm!" all the time!

It was almost taking flying lessons out the window.
I was doing 60mph and it was flashing a red 50mph warning and going 'Ping! Ping! Ping!', every couple of seconds for about 25 miles!

I have used a few, the cheaper ones were not worth having.
I would also say that all SatNavs need to be updated on a reglar basis, at least monthly, and if they are not they become useless.

I have a top of the range Tom Tom now, and it's pretty good, not been taken down any paths yet

My one is blissfully unaware of a stretch of motorway bypassing Reims.
It doesn't half get agitated when it thinks you're doing 80 mph through a field.

My brother bought a new Satnav about 3 months ago, and had a celeb voiceover. When he came down he was raving about the up-grades, and the fact it was 'intelligent' and could avoid roadworks etc via live feeds etc.

[/quote]

I hate 'intelligent' sat navs, If I program a route then that is the route I want to take  not one the sat nav thinks will be quicker or shorter.
