School Proms

Been told that i have got to start thinking about my daughters school prom NEXT YEAR , she has seen a dress that she likes now but as all us men know that means squat in 3 weeks time .....

And also other half has said to start thinking and making inquiries about a car for the occasion , i can just about remember going to the end of term school disco in what ever non school wear i had and sure i rode or walked there

They do seem to be becoming a thing don't they. Son 1 (25) never had one, son 2 turned in his habitual heavy metal patches jacket to his last year & this time round for daughter we found a little boutique place in Affleks in Manchester (for them as know it) where she got a lovely designer full length skirt and corset top. Neither were bothered with cars tho, they're like me in that respect, if it goes and the rain stays on the outside it'll do. but the amount of limos and hummers and big Audi's that kids were piling out of was surreal.

@biggs682 if she wants something a bit different or not from the same rail in the same shop lots of her pals will be buying from, you'll need to plan in advance and get ready for lots of standing round small boutiquey rabbit holes amongst impossibly fluffy frocks

Too poor for proms?! You're lucky! I was too poor to even be a kid!

My daughter is only 5 ....... Probably wise to start looking now then considering how quickly things escalate :-D

I didn't. That sort of thing was not common practice back in the 80s in a crappy Havering comprehensive.
I did however attend one at my girlfriend's school, she was at an American school over here. I recall I was wearing a rather horrible jacket and a tie borrowed from dad

That's because you're a bloke. I remember my first school disco, and my mother making me a broidre anglais peasant top, and a tiered skirt in a red fabric with flowers on it. Every young woman there had a peasant top. If you were an expert on fashion history, you could probably calculate my age from this fact.

My niece went to her prom the other week in jeggings*...

I want to cheer her on in her insouciance, but there is never an excuse for jeggings.

Of the small handful that I have been aware of in my family/circle of friends it would appear that the idea is to out-do everyone else in the frock/suit/transport stakes.

A decent sized industry leeches off of the back of it.

Trashy - but seemingly what the youngsters want. Or at least what they have been brain-washed into wanting.

My friend's Son went to his prom in a rather nice hired Jaguar. Hired tux and fancied himself as James Bond
Another friend's daughter went to hers in a hired stretch Hummer that 5 or 6 of them had persuaded their parents to club together for. Her frock was over £400 I pointed out that her dress cost more than my wedding dress and shoes and my own car put together. Then of course Amber had to have posh shoes, hair, make up, jewellery......... That prom cost my mate nearly £1000. She was well unimpressed when I said that you could get a really nice bike for that.

It's all gone a bit bonkers. Don't forget kids now Graduate each year from infants upwards. Definitely getting a bit silly, I think.

This is my take on it. From what I see on Faceache the average spend is £400+. Frock, hair, make-up, nails, shoes, limo or better, spendo etc

Its a good idea that they have a knees up when finishing school but it seems like 1 up for everything. Great for the parents that can afford the excess but not nice for those who can't.

If we can call a concert a "prom" for historical reasons, then they can call a dance a "prom" for historical reasons.

BTW, did you guys not have school formal dances, until you got this American import? That's just sad
