Don't expect the old military road to be flat. Although there aren't any large hills on it, it's a bit of a roller coaster. Also, the winds are predominantly westerly (this week excepted) so if you hit bad weather it could be a bit of a slog. I would avoid the A75 where at all possible.
Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse are all nice places to stop but if you are doing this in one day, you probably won't have that luxury.
