Hello,
I wanted to share an experience I had today, just to get it off my chest as it's been bothering me since it happened.
I was driving home from work on narrow country roads when I came across a bloke on a mountain bike. It happened to be on a bend where I couldn't see a thing on the other side of the road, so I was unable to overtake. After the bend, there was a hill, again preventing me from seeing the rest of the road. I waited patiently behind him for an opportunity to overtake (which a lot of people probably wouldn't have done, in my experience), and it's a pretty good job I did since cars kept flying over the hill. I felt a bit sorry for the bloke actually; since my clutch control is abysmal, I was revving a bit to try and keep the car moving slowly, which he might have thought I was doing on purpose. He was also struggling a bit as the hill was relatively steep, again, making me feel for him!
So, eventually, we got over the hill and I could see the rest of the road, so I indicated and went around him, giving him plenty of room. As I passed him, we briefly made eye contact, and I half expected a wave of thanks, much like I give to drivers who have waited patiently behind me for a while. But, for some reason, he decided to throw me the dirtiest of looks, apparently for no other reason than the fact that I chose not to endanger his, my own and other drivers' lives by overtaking sooner.
I probably shouldn't be bothered by this as much as I am, but for some reason it really annoyed me. I'm used to being beeped at by impatient drivers who want me to drive into oncoming traffic to squeeze past a cyclist, but for a cyclist to be irritated with a driver for not doing a downright dangerous overtake is just... ugh. I've never experienced this kind of reaction before, but I did have a similarly annoying experience where a cyclist was obviously sick of having me behind her in the car, so she boldly waved me through, only for another car to come flying past in the opposite direction seconds later. Luckily I hadn't started to overtake, but it really irritated me because she obviously just wanted to get rid of me, so waved me through when she couldn't even see whether there was any traffic coming.
I really really don't mind coming across cyclists when I'm out in the car; at most I will probably be at my destination a minute later, which obviously isn't an issue. But situations like this make me really anxious about coming across cyclists when I'm driving!
Sorry for the essay, just really wanted to get that off my chest. Anyone had a similar experience?
