Hi,

A fairly new commuter and I have only ridden 1300 miles. I have a big and bulky U lock and do not want to fit panniers/ a rack to my bike. It is a Carrera racing bike and I'd be interested in advice as to how to store them. I would prefer not to lug it round in a messenger bag as it is oversized and uncomfortable against my back. Any advice for a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

I've had a Masterlock Street Fortum for about 4 years. It's not the best lock on the market but it meets some insurance company requirements. It came with a frame mounting kit that was entirely useless. You really don't want your 1 kg lock to go under your back wheel at any speed when it parts company with a daft plastic moulding. I put it in a small rucksuc or panniers. I followed somebody to Whitstable on Friday night who seemed to dangle his small U lock off the back of his saddle. It was a Kryptonite Evolution, I think. It looked like a really neat solution.

personally leave it at work if you can, or find another solution. As for link dont think I would fancy something big bulky strapped round my waste.

I leave my Kryp NY at work, I wouldnt dream of lugging it about, I used too when visiting the shops after work but bought a cheap lock when just nipping in somewhere.

I flip my D'lock so its parrallel with the seat tube (I've not got a picture to hand with it mounted on the road bike but its something like this). I thought about leaving it at work and occasionally do but I like to stop off at the shops sometimes on the way home. Touch wood, I have no problem when I left my lock, as its in a secure bike shed but be wary if you have to leave the lock in the open; from reports its a common ploy for theifs to pick the lock over night so they can get the bike out of it easy in the morning or superglue the lock just out of malicous or in the hope the user might leave their bike unlocked whislt they go in search of the tools to fix it.

In have 3 locks, 2 big industrial d locks, one lives at work, the other at home.
the third lock is a light combination lock suitable for a quick nip into the shops on the way home, and this one lives on the bike

As long as I breathe, I attack.
I leave a d -lock and cable lock in the bike sheds , out of the way of the racks and spare keys in my locker, i also have a cheap cable lock in the locker as well as a back up.

I thought that about the hiplock until I tried it on in the shop, you honestly don't even notice it's there.

My lock is left at work, in the bike cage, along with the majority of others.

If I need to use a lock occasionally whilst out and about I use a small cable lock.

No thanks looks like a hernia waiting to happen. I look to reduce weight I carry on my bike I carry enough non essential crap as it is. Leave at work easier, lighter and less chance of a nice long extended break in hospital.
