Stockport council tells drivers to measure size of potholes if they want them fixed

Staff at a cash-strapped council have been telling motorists to measure their own potholes – to prove they are big enough to fix.

Under a new policy, Stockport town hall will only repair holes that are more than a foot wide or 1.5 inches deep.

Residents ringing a special helpline have been told to check measurements – and take photographs.

Argh.

Foot wide is big enough to swallow a bike.

Thank god Dooley Lane near Dan Bank (Marple) was finally re-surfaced. It's a 40 mph, downhill section where the inner 1m was totally broken, and full of holes big enough to throw a bike. It's now silky smooth.

Carry a tape measure and a screwdriver with you. If a pothole isn't quite big enough, enlarge it with the screwdriver then report it!

So would they also require that you wear a hi-viz vest, hard hat and steel toe boots as well as placing cones and warning signs around the pothole, together with two weeks notice to the LA of an impending obstruction in the road, before measuring the hole while some mates, similarly dressed stand around directing traffic?
