Quite possibly the most selfish thing I have seen you say. Frankly i'm disappointed.
So its my fault the cheapest things in life are often the most harmful to the environment? I have virtually no say in what is made and how it is made. I simply look for the cheapest version of that product and purchase it. Explain how that is selfish.

Not my problem.
Kind of says it all really.
Cheap isn't always cheerful. Rechargeable batteries would be better for the environment in the long run, and also better for your pocket.

I would suggest given your recent postings a more worthwhile use for you spare time. Go to homebase, or b and q or some similar store. Invest in a tin of paint and a paint brush. Paint a wall now sit back and watch the paint dry. Enjoy life is to short for this

Because you can choose to not buy the cheapest crap that's the most harmful. You make that choice, nobody else does.

Course, there is the option of just not buying it.

I left the guy who's bike is always next to mine a note this afternoon as I left. It was along the lines of this:

Hi
A few weeks ago I had a light taken from my bike. As yours was the only one here that day, I was wondering if you knew anything about it?
I would appreciate it if you sent me an email. My college number is ******.

Whether or not he will contact me is one thing, what he knows about the missing light is another. Hopefully the person can be more helpful than I suspect he will.

This is not an accusation. You accuse the other cyclist of nothing. You are just asking for information...

But it reads like an accusation. It reads a lot like an accusation. If I saw a note like that on my bicycle, I'd feel slightly creeped out and slightly accused.

Nonetheless, you have done it. I'd advise you to avoid career paths involving access to launch codes for a nuclear deterrent. You might be inclined to escalate where a more prudent approach might offer greater benefit to mankind.

With bicycle lamps, bicycle computers, pumps, bidons and just about anything else that is easily removed, the safest notion is to remove it yourself. Others have noted this already in the thread.

'I was wondering if you saw anything' would be a far more diplomatic approach. You do sound accusatory and so long after the event! Hope you get closure!

Don't leave the lights on the bike. Simple.
Oh come on, the poor lad's got to get to his classes. It's going to take all day to get the 15 odd lights off his bike and then back on again. What if he gaffer tapes them all securely to the bike?

I can't believe you left a note. The light probably fell off, they do. It does read like an accusation though. The 'rider' probably knows nothing about it. There is nothing to stop other folks getting into shared cycle parking. They only need the door to not have been shut or locked properly for someone to get in.

Was it a cheap flasher, be interested to know. It's really not worth getting stressed about it. I've had number of lights where the bracket on the light body has failed, for the lamp to bounce off down the road. Most I've recovered for the batteries, but the odd one fell under car wheels.

For a cheap light I'd not get worked up about it.

There has been a misunderstanding somewhere. I am not a lecturer. I am a pupil, but I have access to the cages because I was under temporary employment (work experience) with the college last year.

I seriously doubt that the light fell off. On the day it went missing, I checked when I got to college that all lights were still on. When I came back to my bike in the evening, only one was missing and I noticed it immediately (I have to access my bike from the rear).
The cages do not have access to everyone, so by default the person who owns the other bike might know something. They might not be the person who took it, but when the cages were open an opportunist thief might have taken it and evaded capture by the other cyclist (if the other person was even paying attention or gave chase (I would like to think I would give chase to a criminal when something has been taken from someone elses bike and they would return the favour)).

Your note's rubbish Matthew, leave this instead:

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.

If you return my light now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you.

But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.
