So, im sure there are lots of people out there who advertise bike servicing & what you get is an oiled chain & a quick wash.

Has anyone got any service nightmares they wish to share?

This could be self service that went wrong or paid for service only to find they did little more than mentioned above

I think I may have mentioned one of the bikes from the fleet at work that went to Hellfrauds for a service and a new BB, and came back with both cranks pointing in the same direction.

The '6 week check' on my Whyte MTB wasn't great from Edinburgh Cycles in Leeds; they left a big oily mark which wouldn't clean off from the frame (matt white paint) and messed up the brakes.

Why did I use them? My Cycle-to-Work scheme has only Edinburgh as an option. My next C2W bike won't be taken back once it's been signed for.

For every bad service/LBS there's a good one; I now use Sowerby Cycles in Mirfield. They're not the closest but every time they've done a good job at a decent price.

I know a guy who severed the first joint of his index finger while servicing a bike. Inverting the bike and turning the pedals rapidly with one hand while oiling the chain with the other demands great care.

I'm sure there have been fatalities.

Chopping vegetables to prepare them for cooking demands great care, but most people manage not to sever fingers while doing it.

Evans cycles had one of my bikes in as part of a product safety recall, when it was returned to me it was missing screws from the rear rack, the finishing kit was missing, badges and plastic bottle cages gone, a magnetic catch was missing its circlip which held it in place, the gears weren't indexed and the seat post was so greasy that it was white with grease instead of its actual colour, black.
