Hi
Just wondering if any of you could recommend somewhere to get my bike serviced. I've used my local evans once before but wasn't happy. I live in West Sussex. (Burgess hill)
Many thanks

Would you not rather DIY? There's loads of vids online and the basic tools you need are cheap enough. Just don't do what I did and let your mates know. The favours never seem to end lol

I paid for a full service last year and wish I hadn't. A lot of parts (BB, chain, front hub) were described as "OK but in the next 500 mls who knows?" meaning I ended up paying to replace stuff that was still OK. I still ended up having to replace the cassette myself despite being told that if I changed the chain at the service I wouldn't need a cassette. TBH, it was more hassle getting to the shop and back (no loan bike available) than to have serviced things myself when they needed doing rather than all at once.

I take mine to Cycle Point Evans in Leeds, they are good enough and its convenient for me getting home as I don't drive, not as good as Chevin cycles but will take the Summer bike there next month for its service.

Unfortunately I live about 250 miles from you so can't really help, but it just so happens I have had my bike a year next week and have ridden over 3,000 miles on it. I bought it online from Evans and took advantage of the free 6 week service, then after 6 months paid for Evans Silver Service, which they recommend after 6 months. I was going to book it in for a Gold Service which they recommend after 12 months, but that would cost £90. I do think a service would be worthwhile but that price seems quite steep so I will probably look for a small local cycle shop to do it, but I'm not sure if they will do it to the same standard.

I wondered what it is about Evans you weren't happy with. I have been happy with them when I have used the shop in Liverpool but it is just the price that puts me off getting my bike serviced there again.

I am a newbie cyclist with a new bought over the internet bike. I set it up myself, and will service it myself. I am no mechanical guru, simply keen and happy to read on-line instructions and how-to books. If I can do it, anyone can

Who keeps steeling my smilies? At the end of the above should be a smilie, a cool smilie with sunglasses, and a beer chinking cheers thing. This forum is strange.

You've been robbed. I recommend you learn to adjust the gears and brakes yourself - it's one of the easier bike maintenance tasks, and you'll save money in the long run .

It was a 2nd hand bike I also wanted checking out not just the brakes/gears. tbh took her out this morning on my commute and the gears feel like they have been indexed by a 2 year old and there is less than 0.5mm between brake and rim, tough to get right without rubbing.

Back to Evans after work, you can be sure my summer bike is going nowhere near that place.

Not sure about Evans to be honest took my Trek into a London branch wanting a silver service £55 plus a few minors received a call from their service centre stating all sorts of things most of which can’t be seen unless you start striping the bike down all of which ended up costing £160. I know you can just say no but then they will still charge for the silver service and put any issues down to the work you didn’t have done. i find this kind of sales pressure to be very bad even possibly bordering on a hard sales technique.
