Default is Automatic, the phone constantly searches for a stronger signal. Manual it gets the signal without the constant searching.

It can be slower to get a signal if it loses it.

Doesn't sound quite right for me then. The signal down there is always shreds at best - I'm guessing it'd spend the whole time with no signal if it logged off every time it lost one. I'll have to live with the battery drain. But thanks anyway - appreciate it.
