Anybody use a shaving subscription service? For those that don't know, it's an online service that you pay a direct debit for and receive supplies of blades, gel etc at regular intervals. The two main ones seem to be Cornerstone and Harrys

Harrys are American and cost slightly less than the UK company Cornerstone. I've had both products on trial the last couple of weeks and can't really separate them on quality. They're both roughly on a par pricewise with Mach3. The shave is better than a Mach3 though and I wonder if a Direct Debit will put an end to the fits of apoplectic rage whenever I have to buy blades at the supermarket.

Any others use them? Do people prefer safety razors and/or cut-throats?

I have honestly heard of this, but then I've got a full beard.

I use a safety razor 95% of the time. Blades cost pennies, even on the high street and although there is a learning curve involved, you will find that a safety razor gives a better and more comfortable shave after a little practice. Use proper shaving soap and a brush, it will work better no matter which razor you are using.

Sometimes I use the two blade system from Lidl which also works out dirt cheap and gives good results and is much the same as using any other modern razor.

I refuse to pay Gillette prices as there is simply no need.

Slightly off topic: I've never used a shaving brush: how does it work better than just using finger tips (not being sarcy, a genuine question)? Also, I no longer use shaving foam, but instead use a bar of soap or whatever other cleaning product is available.

I've tried with cut-throats and safety razors, but even driven by my intrinsic Scots stinginess I can't get away from the severe razor burn around my neck. Using the safety razor is certainly more pleasurable - the hiss as it slices through the growth is lovely - but it takes longer and is prone to cuts. When my dad saw the safety razor in my bathroom he thought I'd gone nuts.

I use Cornerstone and it is a great product.
When you make your first purchase from them you can decide you often you receive the blades and they remind you about 7 days before delivery so you have the option to defer.
They recently sent me a tube of their sharing gel which is nice and refreshing.
If you decide to go down the Cornerstone route let me know and we can both get £10 credit.

Just grow a beard, you'll be surprised at how many young girls find you 'Windswept and Interesting'

Barbers and other experts will talk about how the bristles of the brush exfoliate the skin and lift the stubble away from it to allow a closer shave. I have no idea whether or not that's true but for me I like to use a brush as you can produce a nice thick, creamy lather which allows the razor to glide smoothly and you will also find you use less soap/cream when using a brush.

I use Lidl 5 blade jobbies. I think they are called Shark 5 or something. I have yet to be persuaded by advertisers that shaving is somehow a celebration of masculinity. It's just a bore.

IME a brush gives a better lather and smoother shave. Shaving soap is a con, any soap, bar or liquid, will do the job.
Another thumbs up from me for Lidl razors.

I currently use Cornerstone on an 'as required' basis and find their products suit me great. The latest delivery consists of their new blades and a new handle as they aren't compatible with the old one. Not got round to using them yet as still running done stock from the last order.

Do they do refills for that? I've a funny feeling the blades are from the same factory (Feintechnik) as the Harry's razor

Yes. I've been using them for years. They do four-packs of Shark 5 blades for about £4 (I think). It's worth stocking up because sometimes there is a drought. I still resent paying that much so I make a blade last for weeks before treating myself to a new one.

Edit: Lookee here..
