As a token of affection the wife brought me back a Sherbet Fountain (*) today with the weekly shop.

For some reason they are now sold in funny little plastic tubes with a twist off top. How long has that been going on and not exactly green packaging is it? But the real dilemma is what to use the empty tube/top for. I'm sure it's useful for something but for what?

[* For the avoidance of any doubt I am referring to an item of confectionery rather than some other powdery white substance of similar appearance.]

Didn't they used to have a stick of liquorice sticking out of the top?

Yes, but they like to call it a liquorice dip!

The new plastic top is cunningly shaped to give the impression of the top of the liquorice stick. EU regulations no doubt.

You inspired me to do a quick search online - it is Friday afternoon, after all.... Oh hang on. Never mind, I still did a search and found this on the Independent website:

Customers in a fizz over sweet-shop favourite

Stephen Joseph, Tangerine's chairman, said he hoped customers would realise that the new design closely mirrored the old. "I know it sounds a bit anaemic to say that we changed the packaging for hygiene reasons but it did need to be done. The new design keeps the sherbet much fresher and means the liquorice stick no longer pokes out of the top. I hope people won't mind too much and we have tried to redesign the new package to looks as much like the old one as possible."

No you blow down the liquorice stick, thus creating the (literal) sherbert fountain. Then you'd breathe it in, get it stuck all over your eyeballs...etc...

See - no-one really knows what the yukky liquorish was for.;)..this just confirms that I was right in chucking it away as soon as I opened my fountain.

I must be spending too much time on the bike and missing all these World issues - it's all over t'internet.

Here's what the packaging looks like - not for the faint hearted.

What's Obama got to say about it that's what I want to know.

We use a form of space dust for imaging the stomach!

Combines with a lemon drink, it inflates the stomach makingthe surfaces more visible!

Back on topic... this is almost as sacrilegious as changing the smarties tube....

Smarties are round - they belong in a round tube. If God had meant Smarties tubes to be hexagonal he would have made Smarties hexagonal

Simples!
