It's worth checking the how clean the cable cut is under the ferule, if its not perfectly straight and clean it can cause the inner to rub/catch. I found cutting the outer with a piece of inner cable in place helps to stop the outer deforming (and use proper, decent cable cutters, not pliers etc).

Having said that, I had a poor experience with Lifeline cable outers on SRAM. No problem with them on Shimano, but was never happy with the shift quality on my SRAM Rival setup.
Thanks Kestevan, all sorted now.

All sorted now. Bought SRAM cable & outer. When I took the other cable off it was bent all ways. No wonder I couldn't get it to work! The SRAM cable went in the tight bend round the shifter no problem. I filed the ends of the new outer as an extra after cutting and opening, adjusted and checked operation at every stage, after each piece of tape was fitted to secure the cable to the handlebars, then after retaping. I also bought SRAM slickwire which I now have as spare.

Many thanks to everyone who replied. It all helped! Now to road/trail test it!
