So, I quite fancy a pair of Boardman Team pedals which are seemingly using the Look system. My question is whether my Shimano SPD-SL shoes (R171) will take Look cleats?

I had some Boardman SPD pedals, never again, fell apart as soon as I tried to adjust the tension, they were returned within the hour for Shimano M520s. Rubbish design seeking to copy a good design

I'd stick with tried and tested branded versions

YMMV

Got some Boardman SPDs too, not over keen. But, for cheaper than most Shimanos you get a set pedals which are as light as Ultegra pedals

My M520s were cheaper than the Boardmans

Light doesn't make a lot of difference to me, I prefer reliable and safe when it comes to pedals

Yes, Shimano SPD-SL are the best by a long chalk and you can always find them discounted somewhere on line.

Thanks all - my preference is to get Shimano SPD-SL pedals, as that's what I had on my bike that got nicked. Wanted to get Ultegra or 105, but they're coming in at around £85 and £70 respectively, and wondered if there were more cost-effective options.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and stick with Shimano.

Look Keo is a more cost-effective option..

Have you looked at the comparative weights - you pay about a quid a gram it seems, for example

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-r550-spd-sl-clipless-road-pedals/rp-prod106714 - 300g @ £39
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-105-5800-carbon-spd-sl-pedals/ - 285g @ £66

Ultegra are 260g... http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-ultegra-6800-spd-sl-pedals £85

Much easier to spend tuppence before riding to save the weight ;)

Poin taken :-)

Tbf, I had the R550s on my old bike and they were fine

Look are at a low spot on QC; I've sent back two pairs to Wiggle because the bearings developed play with clicking noise and on both sets the pedal body fell off the spindle.
