You might laugh but I got a cracking pair of boots from 'alternative footwear'. 5" heels, black patent leather ankle boots. Bloomin' gorgeous. Because they were a bit wider in the feet, and designed for men, a size 8 fitted me perfectly and I could wear comfy socks in them too.

I remember watching a programme years ago, one of those can this failing company turn itself around type of shows.

It was a shoemaker who still manufactured at home, but was thinking it might have to go overseas until the boss came up with the idea of alternative men's shoes.

To keep costs down he even did the modelling, the sight of a bald middle aged bloke in thigh boots is an image I won't forget, all for the wrong reasons.

You should try buying deck shoes in Carlisle[hopeless to start with-my own fault]M&S only had shoes for the deformed,and only in huge sizes,10,11 and 12.The other two shops?Hopeless.Ended up in Debenhams,which resembles a chavs palace,most of the stuff seemed to be that worn by the lower class gigolo but finally success,though they look as if the leather comes from two different animals, a water buffalo and a ferret.What a carry on,just to avoid walking around barefoot!

I seem to recall a film on similar lines,called Kinky Boots I think,based on fact I believe.All to do with the saving of aNorthampton family shoe company due to their diversification into producing footwear for the fetish scene.

They make fantastic footwear. A friend of mine is the webmistress for a fetish site and she says that they are fabulous shoes and boots. They have saved lots of people from broken heels.

I remember one of the boss's first thoughts was, "won't the heels have to be stronger to cope with the extra weight?"

He came across as a really sound bloke in that documentary.

I find it easier nowadays than I used to, as a child with a wide size 7 I found it hard whereas now that feet seem to be larger it's a bit easier. I generally wear either a 41 or 42. Once I find a pair I like I try to buy another several months later by which time me they are often out of stock. I like Birkenstocks so bought myself another pair at the weekend, and hush puppies often seem to fit my feet if I choose the ones with the more rounded style at the toe.
