It's an old habit from motorcycling. Had mirrors so no need unless Changing direction. One that I intend to get out of doing.

On the rb you change 'lanes' by correctly following the markings. I've lost count of the times I've seen cars fail to do this. Please do as you promise.

Oh, the RB is different, im checking all the time, the part I don't bother is from exiting the RB to the next one. More focus on speed than worrying what is behind me on a straight bit of road.

I always take primary on roundabouts. Idea being that riding the lines makes the lane/exit choice unclear, and invites a car sandwich.
It gives me better presence, and only the real dickheads/people in a hurry will try to overtake.

Holy hecky peck! To think a normal roundabout still scares me some and you have this to deal with :O I'd be too scared to stick to anything other than the cycle lane (and still worried then) and start wishing for a winged bicycled ;)

I haven't had to tackle any roundabouts that large, or fast, yet.
However I always go around any roundabouts in primary (and as if I was a car or motorcycle).
I follow the sign/lane markings that have been provided, with pleny of shoulder checking.

I prefer to see and be seen.

I have had no major issues as of yet doing this.

The BMW driver would have close passed you. He pulled in pretty quick after he passed you. In a sense you were keeping that guy safe.

Great post, as a relatively new rider this has also helped me to understand a bit better where my positioning should be, good riding!
