Should I replace my Tyre?

The fairy visited me today. Can you have a look at the pic and see if you think I should replace the tyre? This little stone was in there which I think has popped the inner tube but I doubt the stone caused the cut in the tyre - that will probably be from an older puncture I guess. So I guess the same thing will likely happen again. The canal towpath I cyle down (Bridgewater Way in Trafford) is covered in these little stones - this was actually the chosen surface, what a poor decision, some of the tiny stones are like miniscule daggers and I have had them get through tyres before.

Related to this, the tyres are ordinary Marathons 32mm. Have about 3 punctures a year purely from my daily commute. I know this has been debated to death but are there alternatives that may cope better with this particular surface?

Holes are perfectly okay and tyres won't necessarily puncture because of them. That tyre looks like it's reasonably well worn anyway though, so it might be worth considering replacing soon.

Marathon plus are virtually bomb proof albeit a bit shite ride wise, on the road at least. I wouldn't choose them again for my purposes (90% road riding), but on flinty and stony towpaths I'd probably choose them.

hmm yeah - had them a year and done around 3500 miles on them. That is the rear one. Must admit - took me ages to get the tyre back on and I hear it's much worse with the Marathon plus.

How deep does that cut go? If it penetrates right through the cords of the carcass I'd be thinking of a new one. If not, perhaps a bit of rubber cement to keep out the grit and keep using.

Three punctures in a year of commuting? Blimey! Not bad!
