Should I travel to Turkey?

I think it would be nice to go to Turkey. Yes, there is a bit of a contretemps nearby, but next year it may be less safe or impossible, and you may miss an opportunity.

This is a great point. I desperately want to go to Petra in Jordan. I wish I'd gone before I had my son but I didn't, and now I think there's a good chance I will never go.

You should write to George Osborne, he could think about a cultural awareness cap to ensure no one gets too much.

What an excellent idea!

I loved Fethiye and would go back in a heartbeat, although the food poisoning was not exactly a fun couple of days.

I travel a lot with work and get to go to some very 'interesting places' regarding security. I am just a bit mindful of putting myself in stupid situations. If you think about the billions of Europeans that have gone on holiday in the last 20 years, less than 1000 have been killed in a terrorist attack. The odds of it happening are infinitesimally small. Go and enjoy yourself.

I've been there diving. Very civilised place and people. It all seemed very laid back and casual, but all ran like clockwork. The dolmas (bus) did a loop and stopped anywhere if you put your hand out - but came past our digs +/- 2 minutes of the expected time and wouldn't have shamed the Swiss Railways for timekeeping. The diving operation was quite casual seeming but you could see that they were diligent in watching out for the less experience and making the odd suggestion without nannying or being all jobsworth with paperwork (common in diving). I dare say there are backward areas (politically) in Turkey, as there are rough areas in some British Cities, but all in all, I'd have no worries about visiting.

At the risk of derailing the thread into politics, I have to say the big "up yours!" the EU have given Turkey is a diplomatic own goal of the hoghest order. A civilised, democratic and west-leaning nation in a strategically important position (geographically and politically) so we (the EU) tell em they're not our sort and they should go and be friends with all the extremist countries instead - bonkers! It's to the UK's credit for once that we supported 'em.

We stayed in Marmaris a few years back with the added bonus that the Tour of Turkey was in the town for two days.

One thing, you'll find that Bianchi make BSOs. There are loads of crap Bianchis around.

We got stuck there an extra week due to the volcano.

I was quite upset when I found this out, but consoled myself that it's pretty unlikely they're genuine Bianchis!

We stayed a bay over in Icmeler, which is a bit quieter than Marmaris - nice walk around the coast too.

Brian Sewell is a big fan of Turkey - can't think of a better recommendation.
