I've been there diving. Very civilised place and people. It all seemed very laid back and casual, but all ran like clockwork. The dolmas (bus) did a loop and stopped anywhere if you put your hand out - but came past our digs +/- 2 minutes of the expected time and wouldn't have shamed the Swiss Railways for timekeeping. The diving operation was quite casual seeming but you could see that they were diligent in watching out for the less experience and making the odd suggestion without nannying or being all jobsworth with paperwork (common in diving). I dare say there are backward areas (politically) in Turkey, as there are rough areas in some British Cities, but all in all, I'd have no worries about visiting.
At the risk of derailing the thread into politics, I have to say the big "up yours!" the EU have given Turkey is a diplomatic own goal of the hoghest order. A civilised, democratic and west-leaning nation in a strategically important position (geographically and politically) so we (the EU) tell em they're not our sort and they should go and be friends with all the extremist countries instead - bonkers! It's to the UK's credit for once that we supported 'em.
