Just found this:
Bicycles are, in law, carriages (as a consequence of the Taylor v Goodwin judgment in 1879) and should be on the road not footway. (Technically speaking, a ‘road’ is a ‘carriageway’).

Basically car drivers telling us to get on the footpath are inciting us to break the law........

I had an amusing chat with a guy after a public meeting at which several cyclists had been voicing complaints with regard to arrangements for cyclists at road works which will commence shortly. This guy called out during the meeting "Im sure Im not the only one fed up of hearing from whinging cyclists".
Anyway, he approached me, as one of the whingers, after the meeting and his opening line was road tax:biggrin:. I responded in the usual fashion and asked him how much VED he paid and did he know some car owners pay no VED. He didn't know even how much VED he paid every year.
Having failed on that score he informed me that a cyclist had sworn at him:eek: after he TOLD the said cyclist to use a path beside the road. I said I had heard of drivers swearing at cyclists, there are rude people in the world, we just have to get used to it.
Having lost again, he asked if I did Time Trialling, I said no but he still felt the need to tell me about TTers who cycle on the road instead of on the one meter strip. I said I was unaware of any obligation to cycle on the strip, he also was unable to tell me which rule was being breached!
He gave up at that point:smile:

Are you sure he shouted what you accused him of shouting?

I'm fairly sure he didn't shout dickhead, although that's what I thought at the time it happened. I think the other comments on the lines of f@cker or faggot are probably right. Of course it might have been all innocent.

Last time I was told not-so-politely to get in the cycle lane, by a driver who obviously wanted to be stopped one bike-length further forward in the queue for the traffic lights, I replied "don't be silly dear". Had the desired reaction

The spring and summer are the prime seasons for being shouted at out of cars, most shouters make the mistake of going too fast for us to hear, the experts will slow down have a passenger shout (one word is most effective) and then speed off, bonus points are awarded for doing a sort of swerve/jig, points are removed for being caught by the cyclist and having an awkward conversation about what you said.
