You're a miserable pair aren't you?

I got two cards, cost was a couple of quid. They got me a few bottles of beer with money I gave them which means I don't have to buy them myself. Net cost nothing. Spot of lunch wasn't free but a few hours quality time with the family is worth it. Lighten up
The point being made though, is why wait until Fathers/Mothers/ Grandparents/Valentines or whatever day is invented by the retail trade to do these things? No need for me to lighten up about it; I am not being entirely serious and in any case it doesn't affect me. I no longer have any Grandparents or Parents, and I am not a parent myself! It was a good excuse to get out on the bike today while everyone else was tied up with family commitments.

The level of obligation surrounding father's / mother's day that is placed on some people, and the guilt that is placed on them should they miss it makes me believe that I am not the one who needs to lighten up. The whole concept of Father's day is utterly cynical and I reject it thoroughly.

My daughter is due to be born any day now. I expect it to be the happiest and proudest day of my life and will never stop loving her, but she will owe me nothing.

You may take a different view when your children are teenagers. To actually have them go for a walk with you and sit across a table from you for a couple of hours is not a minor achievement. If an artificial construct such as Father's Day proves to be the mechanism to encourage this to happen then so be it.

Good luck with the impending arrival

Got this from my son:

He has a small son whom he insists is not annoying him at 6am. I think we may have to consider the appropriate birthday present.
