On the way home from a rather spiffing ride in glorious sunshine on Saturday with @Pale Rider @Littgull @ColinJ @Buck and @Slioch I was met with a downpour of almost biblical proportions.

In keeping with the theme of blessing & redemption I found myself, by some minor miracle, passing, at the very moment the first heavy drops started to fall, this little beauty on the outskirts of Burnby, East Yorkshire -
Shelter.png

Now it may not look much, but since the Googlebot went past several years ago this old bus shelter has fallen out of use (the buses no longer go that way) and some kind souls have taken it upon themselves to turn it into a welcoming little refuge for cyclists and walkers. As well as now being surrounded by flower beds and having bike stands outside the shelter also houses a track pump, puncture repair kit, spare inner tubes, maps, newspapers, novels & books of poetry, a wall-mounted essay on local history (turns out, nothing has happened in Burnby since the Romans left), a box of oddments and nicknacks that you can take from or add to as you see fit, useful local phone numbers and a guestbook!

Myself and my bike fit comfortably inside and it proved to be the perfect place to shelter for an hour while the rain subsided

The guestbook showed that it has been used recently by humanity in all it's myriad glories - from local club roadies to Dutch cycle tourers, Burnby teenage lovebirds to Japanese tourists, far-flung walkers looking for somewhere to cook their tea, to a toddler who loves their granddad. And, of course, some idiots.

It got me thinking - what other little hidden gems are tucked away amongst the nooks and crannies/crooks and nannies of the wonderful British countryside?

Undiscovered micropub, Overgrown historical relic, Hidden garden, Secret path, Timely shelter, Charming honesty box, Creative graffiti, Unexpected vista...share the hidden gems that you've come upon without foreknowledge that have saved your ride, brightened up your mood, or just brought a bit of much-needed simple human kindness into your day.

Cheers,

Andy

There's a larger, but more functional, walkers'/cyclists' shelter half way up Fleak Moss in the Yorkshire Dales.

A note inside says it's a former garage - I suspect from when there was no vehicle access to the small house down a short driveway on the opposite side of the road.

Not much in the way of facilities, it has benches on the three walled sides and a wheelie bin.

Here's one that I watched develop over a period of years, on the famous Cragg Vale climb from Mytholmroyd up to Blackstone Edge.

There were some small, former public toilets at the roadside in the village which were becoming increasingly derelict. I rode past them several times a month and wondered how long it would be before the council had them pulled down, but then I saw a For Sale sign go up ...

It made me laugh. Who in their right mind would buy a tiny, ruined toilet building?

Eventually, somebody did buy the building and the next time I rode up past it I saw signs that something was happening. Scaffolding had been erected and building supplies delivered.

A month or two later, this delightful little cottage had been constructed ...

A 'convenient' location and not of 'bog-standard' construction!

There's a bar in that London near where #1 son lives, on Chatsworth Road, I think, that is a converted public toilet.

In 2009 it had a bench outside you could have rested on

Hmm ... that looks like the householder put it there, but it is on the pavement so the public should be able to use it. I wonder how the owner would feel about random people sitting on it? Perhaps the council told them to remove it?

Some people must have thought they were p*ssing in the wind with that idea...good to see they didn't get disheartened and pull the plug on it. Etc.
