If you use their gait analysis service then buying your first pair in the shop is the decent thing to do. Perhaps in the future, once you settle on a brand and sizing you can save a little by purchasing online.

The running shop i use offers gait analysis and will also discuss what my needs and requirements are (what sort of running, how regularly, what surface etc) and will then recommend a shoe based on that (they dont just try and sell the expensive ones either). They also have 2 running groups a week throughout the year that leave from their shop with a member of staff leading the run, doing stretching exercises and giving you somewhere to change or leave a bag if required. Perhaps i could save a little money buying online, but good customer service like that is worth paying a little extra for - not only that they add something to the local running community beyond just selling some shoes.
