Curlews were calling on my walk yesterday. Been watching the skylarks for about a fortnight now. Amazing dawn chorus this morning. Yep, we've definitely turned the corner now.

On lambing time, I was surprised a couple of years ago to see some newborns in late December. It was on a farm near Pickering, on the kinder edge of the Wolds. I bumped into the farmer and he explained that the timing was managed to avoid fox predation as by the time the cubs need feeding, the lambs are well past vulnerable stage.

I heard my first chiffchaff of the year singing near here at Wicken Fen this afternoon. It was within yards of where I heard the first one last year. I'd like to think it's the same fellow, just made it back from a long old trip.
Also, just popped outside and heard migrating redwings overhead. I guess they'll be over Holland or further by morning.

Loads of bugs out this evening by the Trent. Several swallowed. I assume some breed of bug is hatching?

There's swallowed and then there is swallowed. This little bugger (midge sized) went straight to the back of my throat and nestled there. Post coffee and cake he decided to make his presence known again, and I ended my coughing emphysemically by the side of the road, doubled over.

I was surprised to hear the Curlews where I did, there's maybe only an acre or two of proper moorland up where we were, surrounded by pasture and a quarry. The dog nosed a couple of mallard out of a shallow ditch, which made me feel guilty, as I'd deliberately steered her away from the dew ponds up by the trig point. We'll give that edge a wide berth from now on.
