Single Pannier, which side?

We all seem to be assuming the single pannier will be on the back of the bike.

I suppose it's obvious to everyone that a single front pannier would be best placed on the near side.

The single pannier should be anathema to any reasonably sane person

You Sir, have gone beyond the limits of reason - a single pannier on the front of bike?

Sheer insanity

One of the problems I find with two BikeBins, unless they are both full, is that they steer to rear of the bike on fast downhills.

Usually on the offside, because the side pockets are such that the pocket is facing rearward when offside, but forward when nearside. Thus offside reduces the chance of catching the pocket with my heal and dislodging the pannier.

Without that issue, I would put the pannier on the nearside, since if it does come off the bike then it will fall onto the side of the road and not into the main traffic flow (yes it has happened to me).

Two bike bins, good god. I've got one which I find too cumbersome and noisy as it is. I imagine riding with two on is something like riding one of those mt bikes adapted to be used by medics or as actual ambulances. I've yet to find a situation in which the bike bin is better to use than a less obtrusive non rigid pannier.

I think most panniers are right and left handed. I've never seen a pair which are both the same, or one of them would be snafu for the very reason you give.

On my day to day bike, I have one old pannier that stays on, and has a fold over top, which I use to sling the D locks in and sits on the offside. My other stuff, tools, pump, lunch etc, goes in a newer, different style pannier, that goes on the nearside.

Of course, on the Brom, I have one bag, and it hangs on the front. (plus the saddle bag at the moment, as I only just got the front bag, and haven't taken the saddlebag off yet)

I have 2 bikes and usually leave one on each - as they have a front and back end that means the answer to the OP is .... depends which bike I'm using.

There you see, someone with sense.

If you need a single bag, then a central luggage system on front or rear

Harmony and sense are restored

Nearside on the way to work, offside on the way home.

For some stupid reason, I believe it's more aerodynamic. See... the wind usually comes from the left on my way to work, and my right on my way back.

And I use one of my Deuter Uni panniers, which is relatively curvy...

The rational part of my brain says this is nonsense. But to the reptilian brain pedalling uphill in the wind it makes sense.

To balance the Coriolis effect I always have my single pannier on the left when in the Northern hemisphere and I transfer it to the right when I cross the equator.

Arch has odd panniers!

There's got to be a law against that.
