Well if you're determined that you want single sided SPD's

This sounds like you were suggesting it is not a very good idea... were you?

I would be less happy with them if I only had one bicycle
Actually, I do have only one bicycle (well, ok, got also an MTB, but that's completely different story), and that's exactly the reason why I was looking into that kind of pedals, as the most flexible solution.

I have M324's on my commuting bike and can't fault them at all.

I wasn't suggesting the M324's are not a good idea - it depends on how you use the bicycle. If you cycle predominantly with cleats but want the ability to occasionally use the bike without wearing SPD shoes then I would go along the M545 route - they look better on the bike than off (see picture)

If you ride largely short journeys unclipped - but want the ability to occasionally ride clipped in M324's may do nicely.

My comment about only one bicycle is because I try and cycle at least 100 miles a week (or did until my shoulder gave up the ghost) and on that sort of mileage I would get irritated with continually flipping the pedal right side up. I am lucky enough to have the 3 road bicycles. My Triban - for short sprints (20- 60 miles) which has Shimano SPD M520
Claud Butler Dalesman - Longer trips out 40 -100 miles which has the M545's
Falcon Westminster - Largely used for trips into town (3 miles there and back) but occasionally used for trips out up to about 40 miles - so has the M324's

So it's horses for courses...... BTW my 545's are fitted with the reflector cage as I do use the CB after dark - the pedal would look smaller without it.....but they would probably not look right on the Triban.
