single speed sprocket and 9 speed chain

I have a surly single speed sprocket (3/32") and a Shimano XT 9 speed chain (narrow) - will they work together without either component getting damaged or should I wait until I get a 3/32" chain?

I'll answer my own question - according to the surly website, their single speed sprockets will work will all 7,8,9 and 10 speed chains.

It will work but make sure your chainline is perfect. 9 speed chains are designed to shift and you don't want that happening grunting up a big hill.
I prefer the belt and braces way with a SS specific chain...KMC are good.
