SKS Mudguards

I have 2 bikes with SKS guards on, plus a 3rd with Raceblade clip on ones.
Have to say I've had no trouble with them at all, saying that I get the lbs to fit them
Well, except for the RB's managed those myself

I've had SKS on my Giant FCR3 for 3 winters now, and had immense problems fitting the brake bridge mount. I ended up cutting half of it off with a hacksaw, which has sorted it nicely.

So, instead of two pairs of claws holding the mudguard under the brake, there is only one, which sits neither under the brake caliper nor under the frame. Using cable ties never crossed my mind.

According to two LBS' it's not possible to fit them, one of them - a Giant dealer showed me a Giant Defy specific fender, from Giant themselves due to the low clearance.

Thing is, at the bike shop I really trust they have a range of new Giants where they are fitted on. A quick look made me realise however that the clearance was larger than mine, a 2009 model.

So there it is, after all the poncing around, they were never going to fit and neither, as I discovered at the other Giant dealer, do the Crud Racers!!

Happy days, yes, perhaps should have taken them to LBS knitgirl but could have easily turned round and said they just don't fit your bike which given my discovery today would have been fairly likely.

I have a 2009 Defy 2.5 - and guards are a challenge. I'm on my second set of the Giant guards made for the bike, but I think I have it sorted now . The first set fell to bits, and the second likewise - at the bracket which holds the two vertical stays on the rear. Our rough roads set up so much vibration that they suffer from stress cracking. I sorted this with some pvc strips and some small bolts.

But, clearance is absolutely minimal, and it took me a good 2-3 hours to set up the rears - the front's seem easier. The local bovine population don't help either......(and no, I'd not been off road)...

I've got SKS guards on my hybrid and Raceblades on my road bike. While the raceblades were pretty easy to fit, SKS guards are indeed a massive pain to fit, and once you have fitted them, you find you have to then have to constantly adjust, bend, stretch and pull them about as they keep starting to rub against your tyres.

BUT!

After a week or two they'll settle in and be fine forever.

SKS full mudguards are a bit fiddly to fit, but with a bit of patience, the vice, and the junior hacksaw I got there.
They are fine for the winter bike and do a great job. This is my 3rd winter with them and they have never given me any problems, but I just wish I had stumbled across this video before I started the job..................it explains it all:

Watch and learn...................I could have!!!!!!! Just a bit of imagination with a road bike, but basically the same.

I bought some hybrid 700C mudguards for v-brakes.

They certainly do 'what it says on the tin'.

My wife's bike is a Giant Defy but I knew in advance that std SKS didn't fit (or fit easily) and that Giant made specific guards for the Defy range. There is sod all clearance as people have noted but I can't say I found them difficult to fit, just a little time consuming. Other than gunking up due to lack of clearance, there's not been a problem with them. Likewise the std SKS guards I have fitted to 2 of my bikes. I might have to push them back into position if the bike falls or has been leaning on something but - generally speaking and touch wood - I've not had problems with them.
