We have a fairly comprehensive TV package with sky, but we also have Netflix and have the BT TV box. Since our kids have left home, we mostly watch the free view channels, but I do like the recording process on the sky box.

I'd like to cancel the sky, but are there any hidden pitfalls? Am I right in thinking that any recordings that we haven't yet watched which were in the subscription packages will no longer be able to be viewed?

Has anybody cancelled sky - what did you miss?

I don't have a TV........ only joking.

Just do it! they know you fear missing anything and won't leave just in case but it really is a big fat rip-off. Last time I looked at my dads account he was paying £60-70 a month but I just can't persuade him to cancel it.

You won't be able to watch any recordings at all, you'll effectively brick your Sky box. You can get them off it beforehand if you have a DVD recorder or similar.

We left Sky for a brief flirtation with BT. It was awful, we went straight back. I'm by no means a fan of Murdoch but they do know how to put together a decent TV package and UI.

Cancel it. In 2 months time they’ll be sending you massive discount offers.
That was the worst part of leaving sky. The godamn phone calls. Incessant nagging calls.

My last call went something like this:
- I don't watch TV
- does anyone else in your household watch TV?

What answer did she expect? "Oh yes I'd completely forgotten My husband watches TV No wonder he's been so angry with me!"

I would rather stick a needle in my eyes than give a solitary penny piece to that rancid aussie gila monster. Does that help?

No.

I tried to cancel a few years ago and was offered three months at half the price I was paying.

That lower payment continued for about nine months, which was either a Sky error in my favour or I misunderstood the offer.

I would advise against using the threat of quitting as a negotiating tactic because, as far as I can gather, Sky sometimes simply agree to disconnect you.

I also had a fairly comprehensive SKY package but didn't like the rising costs, we have lived in this house since 2001 and never had sky here, do I miss it, no, there is plenty on freeview for me and there are cheaper alternatives if you want more.

Happened to me.

I'd been a Sky customer for 18 years and was over a barrel with regard to a broadband fault which was at the mercy of getting lumped with a £300+ bill from BT Openreach whos network carries the sky broadband. So I was going to leave anyway.

Phoned them up to leave and that was that, no drama, nothing. I was expecting at least some effort from the customer retention team but nothing.

This was back in 2011 or maybe 2012 when the Sky Atlantic channel had recently started up and which were watching a lot of stuff on it. Got signed up for Virgin Media and was gutted they didn't have Atlantic! Gutted.

But saying that, if you are fortunate enough to live in a Virgin cabled area, it is a far superior service. The best thing about it is that if it goes wrong they fix it for no extra cost, it is part of the package. This is well worth considering as at the time SKy were also trying to flog me insurance to protect against the TV box going wrong as well as being at the mercy of getting a big bill from Openreach if the broadband or phone went wrong.

No-one should pay for those $ky insurance products - if it goes wrong (and they rarely do), just threaten to cancel if they don't fix it and they'll often cave after a bit of half hearted resistance. Even if they don't and force you to pay for a call out, the charge from $ky is less than the annual premium for their insurance and includes everything up to and including fitting you a factory refurbished box / dish...
