I am now on a "SIM only" contract with Vodafone. Unlimited minutes to all standard UK numbers, unlimited texts, and enough internet access to cover my mobile usage (not sure how many megagegaterrabites it is) for about £16 per month. Phone is a Nokia thing which does loads more than I will ever use it for, and cost about £30 from Tesco.
The one thing I would love to get rid of is my BT landline; but for broadband internet access there doesn't seem to be a viable alternative, so I suppose I am stuck with it for now. It surely can't be long before technology makes landlines a thing of the past.
The main stumbling block to getting broadband without a phone line cost will be BT as they provide the infrastructure the all copper to the home phone lines in the UK and they wont be too keen to lose that revenue until they are forced to by offcom which will happen eventually I would imagine, it is getting more & more common that people don't even have a phone plugged into the landline socket any more.
At the moment Fibre Optic via the phone line is mostly FTTC ( Fibre to the cabinet ) then copper to the house but my hunch is once they roll out FTTP ( Fibre to the premises ) with the speeds that will involve then maybe at that point it will become less of phone line and more of a communications line carrying TV & Broadband & at that point maybe something will happen, maybe they will switch phones to VOIP and drop the line rental at that point or maybe even merge the mobile and home phone then but who knows.
