Morning all,

Got a letter from e-on telling me they need to fit new meters and I have the option of having smart or not.

What are the pro's and cons? Besides the obvious usage tracking (not interested) and automatic readings.
Any reason to have or not have smart meters?

Give me your wisdom and experience.

Merci.

Wait until the second generation of smart meters is available, the first generation, which they are installing now, can't be easily changed between energy providers. The second generation smart meters will be able to change between energy providers more easily. So, tell your energy provider that you're waiting until the second generation meter is available, and don't want one installed until then. :okay:

Just read through Skollys thread on the matter that TMN linked to above. Clearly I have a poor memory as I have read it before, evidenced by the fact that I posted in it a few times.

They say in the letter that my meter needs replacing and that it's a legal requirement. I don't see a reason for this as it seems a fairly modern style digital display meter. I'll stick a picture in the next post.

Think I'm going to sit this one out, seems no advantage to lowering bills and the security and personal data risks etc are certainly not in my favour.

Don't, just say no.I cannot say too much but a mate of mine was a fitter for a short while, but he gave up.He was appalled at the shoddy work done by his other workmates and his bosses were crap, they condoned it.No firms will be mentioned.

But they can change the meter for a newer model, which you can't refuse

You can insist on a normal one.
