Bloody typical. Just as the weather turns nice I end up in my first major incident.

Coming along here at around 20 mph I go through the pedestrian traffic lights just as they are changing. Motorist coming the other way doesn't see me and turns right across my path. I don't have time to brake and hit the car on the side, me and the bike doing a hollywood-style roll over the windscreen.

Police and ambulance attended which went smoothly enough, although one of the polis was not too happy about me going through an amber light. The motorist was immediately apologetic and probably more shocked than I was. A friendly guard from the nearby office complex took care of the bike while I went off to A&E. I got off lucky, with only a sprained ankle and some light grazing on the elbow. I just returned home with the bike, and looks like it came off well too, with only a slightly buckled rear wheel.

Looks like I'm on the bus for a few days, though. :cursing:

I've got a crossing very similar to that near me, with a junction basically on top of the pelican crossing.
I've seen so many close calls with all road users there as people just presume when they see amber that it is ok for them to go.

That's not so good Rasmus, hope you're feeling better today - hope you got his insurance details so you can claim for your bike? Regards, Mark

Eye contact with driver means you can be certain they've seen you - if I can't get eye contact with an oncoming/emerging from sidestreet vehicle I'll assume it has absolutely no idea I'm there.

Hope you're OK and heal up quick!

Don't make assumptions. Just because you believe they have seen you doesn't mean they will not do something silly.

Good point; would you agree, on the other hand, that there's only so much foresight and hazard awareness you can manage on the road without just going everywhere at 5mph? If a driver has seen me, I have proceeded and they do something stupid, I guess I'm hitting the tarmac no matter what assumptions I've made..? Is there an example you might be able to give to further illustrate your point?

Cheers

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Glad to hear you are ok, and mor importantly the bike is too
Seriously though i would get the LBS that you trust to checkit over for anythign you might have missed like fractures in joins etc just in case!Given the situation i am not sure of the ramifications of trying to claim on the other drivers insurance .
I am not saying you were in anyway wrong but you know how unsurance companies like anything they can use for getting out of claims .....

Yes, don't assume they won't do something silly just because their eyes appear to make contact with yours, i.e. proceed with caution at traffic lights/side roads with cars waiting to pull out etc.

Caution doesn't automatically imply cycling slower BTW.

You have my sympathy - the grazes will heal, but bus travel can scar you for life.

re the eye contact stuff: I've had situations where a driver has taken eye contact to mean "the cyclist's seen me, so if I pull out right in front of him he'll brake". You really can't read anything into it either way.

Nothing wrong with going through as they change. I go through as they change to amber, if I'm too close/fast to brake and safely stop before them.

The lights may be on but there may be nobody at home.

Hope you are ok Rasmus.

Thanks for your concerns, guys. I suspect I'll be healed up and back riding soon. The hellish trip on the bus will make sure of it...
