Nothing wrong with going through as they change. I go through as they change to amber, if I'm too close/fast to brake and safely stop before them.

Exactly my reasoning too. I have had several really scare incidents with taxis and busses blasting through an amber that I had braked sharply for.

Yes, don't assume they won't do something silly just because their eyes appear to make contact with yours, i.e. proceed with caution at traffic lights/side roads with cars waiting to pull out etc.

Caution doesn't automatically imply cycling slower BTW.

Have to agree 100%. One of the closest calls I have had while out cycling was with the driver of a VW Beetle. I was on the main road and he was waiting to join from a side road. I looked straight at him and he 'appeared' to look straight at me, when in actually fact he must have looked straight through me. Only good brakes and smart bike handling prevent a collision.
I always like to have eye contact, but never take it for granted.

Geez that sounds scary. I'm assuming you weren't clipped in? I'd hate to think how bad the injury would have been if you were...
