Good anticipation - that's a classic accident-about-to-happen situation. Hidden by the vehicle in front is a big one to watch out for.

I'm disappointed you didn't put her rego on the video though. Didn't you catch her up?

No criticism intended, but it might have been easier to veer right (lane split) as it gives you a bigger buffer and you would not have had to brake so sharply and risk losing your front wheel.

That's alright. It's a fair point. However, the roads at this point are particularly narrow as I'm sure Coco will confirm (I know when I drive down here I don't like being next to an HGV) so it's not the sort of place I'd want to move to the right much, when I'm not sure what is in the right lane. However, in hindsight, it would have been the safest maneuver.

Thats the one... not that it would have been any use in this case

No - don't get one of those Mags - I love your 'ochs' 'n 'fooks'
Glad you're ok, but it did seem a bit of an innocent one..that sort of thing is anticipated as 'normal' for me ie: I expect it and if it happens, I'm past it and looking a bit further down the road...If I was daydreaming a bit, stuff like that would take me by surprise. Often, riding 'down the middle' like that you will encounter lane changers - no indication etc - I would be hoarse if I bothered shouting! I got dinked by a big blue car on Christmas Day, but it is easier to ride with the car - unlike a direct hit from the side. Guy was apologetic - and perhaps he learned something...
Be careful out there.

Ian,

No I don't have an airzound. I'd be too worried I'd use it inappropriately!

BM, I decided that it was an honest mistake. I did catch up, but, unlike me, I just cycled past. She looked mortified when she stopped and realised what she had done. I think she has learned a lesson...

Holding back a little more might be a better option, btw.

Indeed, but the traffic was going slower than I had anticipated, it was down hill (fairly steep) and the road was a bit slippy. I was trying to brake gently to avoid any slips.

Well think further ahead then, and slow down a little earlier.[/User31431]

In mitigation, the vehicle in front should have indicated!

It's also not easy to steer right when your focus is heavily biased/fixated on a target vehicle/potential threat to your left - you get caught in a sort of pscyhological tractor beam that pulls you towards the car as it enters the carriageway.

Indeed. The best example of that I have heard of was from the days I threw myself out of a plane (with parachute of course!). A first timer on the way down saw a river they didn't want to land in, so they fixated on it and in the process pulled down one of the steering cords. They did this all the way down until they landed waist high in the river.

Wow - some people's mindless driving knows no bounds. In that situation I think a lot of smaller cars would have moved right, around the back of the RR to squeeze past. She would still have tried to pull out.

SMA80 commenting on the video is a bit of a muppet - I'm always making eye contact with the driver when passing junctions just in case, even though there isn't much we can do if they do decide to pull out.
