i dunno what the kids were moaning about today . I mean they are only Menthols . ......

i gave up in 2009 , and never smoked in my car . kept resale value higher apparently.

and yes its stupid that people need to be told not to . but the kids will likely be exposed to it in the home anyway so will it do much .I dunno

Probably unprofessional, but.......

When you try and arrange a scan for a patient with a potentially fatal lung condition and cannot do so because they have left the ward to have a fag

Smoking is an addiction, but not treated as such

An extremely powerful addiction as well. I used to smoke until quite recently and if the fix wasn't had, extraordinary lengths would be gone to to ensure you go the fix. These included doing things beyond all reason and logic.

I've done the hospital, unplug the heart monitor, carry the IV / drip stand outside for a smoke thing. Madness when I look back on it now but at the time it seemed quite reasonable.

Yes, you see them lined up outside with their wheel along drip - very sad. As a non smoker, I have often considered that doing this should be regarded as removing the patient from treatment and they should be discharged.

I had a conversation with a patient who pointed oy that if they were an alcoholic, a drug user or addicted to pain killers then there would be support..... smokers are expected to stop.. end of support

Being a non smoker you have no understanding how powerful and overwhelming the addiction can be. Instead of simply ignoring the issue the healthcare system, particularly when in hospital should help people stop smoking. As a minimum, at least while they are in hospital.

I know when I was in there was no help and such is the power of the addiction, I used to nip out for a smoke all wired up but unplugged and the drip stand in tow. Crazy I know but when addicted there is very little that would make you do otherwise. Crazy I know.

As I may have stated earlier I have noticed a lot of smokers smoking outside their house, by the front door because they have children. It is clearly getting through.
A confined place like a car is worse than in the house. Smoking in the car is also visible and the children are clearly not got an option.

I think that the law is a fine idea but I also feel that the Police have quite enough to do without stopping smokers having a fag in a car. I see people every day driving and texting/talking on their phones etc which cause accidents left, right and centre and they don't seem to get stopped by the police so I can't see car smokers with kids getting stopped. I think that it's a bit unrealistic to expect the Police to police it.

Both my parents were heavy smokers. Horrible to be driven across the country while parents were puffing away and I think that's why I had a permanent cough as a kid - until I went away to school when it vanished but came back in the hols - maybe the worry of getting pulled over by the police will stop people lighting up in the car but I do doubt that.mif they are already damaging their kids lungs, some law isn't going to stop them. Sad really.

Alcohol (particularly the pub) has social benefits. The social benefits outweigh the disbenefits.
You and the office for national statistic are making the figures up for sickness, benefits, lost production etc. You have no ideal what the figures are because it is impossible to work out. Obesity isn't taxed at all and it is much more a serious problem, which will only get worse.

Indeed it is. For every pound the NHS spend in treating smoking related illnesses, the NHS receives 6 from tobacco taxation.

That's simply not true I'm afraid. The Treasury used to receive more in duty than smoking cost the economy (sickness, benefits, lost production etc.) but that was many years ago and there was never any hypothecation of smoking related tax income. Tax income from smoking in 2012-13 was £12.3 billion*. Costs of smoking to the economy for the same period was c. £12.9 billion, of which £2 billion was NHS expenditure.
That simply is true. He clearly stated cost to NHS. Try reading the post.

So no TV license!!
O I suspect you do, if the punishment is severe enough.
I pay for my TV licence because I agree with the concept, I like a lot of the BBC's output and I'd rather have at least a few channels not paid for by advertising. I suspect I would use the threat of severe punishment to guide my decision making, but fortunately I don't live in a country where anything I'm likely to want to do will incur such a punishment.

Indeed.

How long before those in car cams record what going on inside as well as outside...?
