Snapped my frame in two last night

Made for a happy long walk in cleats from midway through Richmond Park back to a train station.

14 miles communte 2.5 hours.

Please DO NOT tell me that this is a carbon frame !

I've just recently snapped a Kinesis Crosslight, got a refund from Wiggle no problem tho. Chainstay bust in half!

Other bikes I have snapped over last 20 odd yrs -

Dave Marsh 531C - down tube - repaired properly and resprayed

Unknown 531 cross bike, down tube again! - repaired with a piece of plate brazed around it and home respray - nice!

Diamond Back MTB - chainstay - skipped

Falcon 531 -fork blade at crown. This last one, just thought wheel was making a noise. Got home, undid quick release and fork blade fell out - new forks I think.

Must all that quad power Im putting out

Looks like the other chain-stay was about to let go to. Looks like the chain-stay support introduced a stress point in the chain-stay causing a stress fracture to form, which eventually with repeated loading and unloading propagated across the chain-stay.

I am guessing that it snapped when you were peddling?

Maybe if you'd cleaned the thing a bit more often you'd have spotted the crack before it failed completely.

I am guessing that it snapped when you were peddling?

Didn't notice that it was cracked until I got home and parked it in the hall. Normally fatigue cracks are invisible to the naked eye until they get critical, but with two stays, the complete failure of one was noticeable before complete collapse.

Yes, welds are notorious for introducing stress raisers due to internal residual stresses on top of geometric influences.

Mine snapped at the junction with drop out on the drive side. The frame is a 1980's peugeot which had been converted to a fixed. each pedal stroke pulled the wheel left, rubbing against the frame.

I am planning on getting it fixed but if anyone has suggestions for where in SW london, let me know...

Oh well, that makes me feel a bit better about my Bianchi frame...cracked at the junction of the downtube and BB. Thankfully i caught it early (and i keep a clean bike, which speeds up the realisation thats somethings wrong)
