I beginning to suspect that the hammer and chisel discussed in this thread has been used to give someone a Lobotomy. 🤯

Thank you so much for starting this thread. Little did the community know how much value(?) and chat it would trigger.
@silva : Since you've never fitted or removed a Hollowtech 2 chainset or BB, for your information, this picture shows the driveside with attached spindle passing through one side of an H2 (outboard) bearing.

On reviewing the photographic evidence (and in an attempt to introduce a pedantic dimension to the thread) I don't think "snapped" is an appropriate term for this specific failure.

I have a definition here which is "break suddenly and completely, typically with a sharp cracking sound".

But the photo above seems to show a crack which has not propagated all the way round. The hollow axle seems to still be in one piece which is not consistent with a sudden and complete break.

Scrape, scrape. I think I've reached the bottom of the barrel.

On reviewing the photographic evidence, I think our original poster needs 40 lashes with a hammer and chisel for letting his bike get like that. Followed by a good ducking with a platypus !

I'm always in awe of people who clean commuters regularly.

A single wet commute leaves mine like that. You must spend much more time cleaning than riding!

Anyway, here's the machine with it's newly fitted lovely clean drivetrain to give you nightmares.

10 minutes max to clean. I do have mudguards and a long front flap. Ohh err ! No hammers or chisels were harmed in the process.

Years ago I had a problem with my bike and posted some photos taken immediately on getting home from a filthy muddy rainy ride.

I got a lot of responses. Unfortunately nearly all of them were just pointing out that my bike was dirty. "No wonder you're having problems. You've let your bike get dirty" and so on.

Now, if ever I post a close up of my bike I make sure that it's scrupulously clean in the photographed area

On reviewing the photographic evidence. Would you happen to be riding through BB depth floods?

Assuming that dagger to the heart is aimed at me...

...standing water on the commute is common in winter, though rarely to BB height. I'd say that's about 2-3 times/year, so 20-30x for that spindle. But a really good soaking from standing water, maybe 10-20x per year. In 10 years I'd guess I've replaced the bearings 2-3 times, can't remember exactly.

Just signs that plenty of water has got in to the bottom bracket and spindle area.
