You're probably not putting the inflator head on properly, this is fairly common, and I've done it a couple of times with a mini-pump. I prefer to use a flexi cable end with schrader adapter, as it completely eliminates this happening.

You can replace the end parts of presta valves if they break, rather than replace the tube. Cheaper than a new tube too.

Oh cool - do they just unscrew on something?

I'll save the old tube then.

Yeah, you can just unscrew the end, easier with needle nose pliers, but doable without, then put the new core in. You don't even need to take the tube off, you can leave it on the wheel. I keep a couple in my saddle bag just for when I f**k up with my minipump.

Disengaging.

Ive had the tip of the valve go wobbly or fall off and replaced the tube before it got unusable.

This time it snapped half way down and dumps the whole air volume when disengaging.

Sounds like you're maybe pushing the pump closure too far onto the valve. When I do mine I unscrew the little barrel on the valve just enough to let air pass then attach the pump. If you undo the barrel fully it's very easy to bend or snap the valve.

Never thought to not unscrew the barrell all the way, it always seemed like the right thing to do. Might just not in future.

Agree. I went through a phase of snapping off the little brass nut because I was over-enthusiastic in unscrewing it. Don't undo it all the way. You might have to pump harder at the start to get the air going in, but it does save the valve. Joe Blow is a superb pump, by the way.
