I’m sure I’ve said it somewhere here before that today’s snooker players owe their ability to earn vast amounts of money from the game to Alex Higgins, to a very considerable extent.

Anyway, am I the only one to prefer protracted, tactical frames of snooker to the rather tedious break off followed by a straight in with a clearance type frames?

I think a bit of both is best.
20 frames of tedious safety would be a boring as 20 frames of 100 breaks.

and whilst Higgins was a trailblazer, the money in sport is mostly owed to Barry Hearn, colour tv and a lack of other live sport on TV.

Snooker in a warm dry theatre was far easier to broadcast than football in a rainy cold stadium, when live outside broadcasting started.

Higgins was responsible for bringing the game from the doldrums to the attention of the media in the seventies, which marked the beginning of the boom. Whether it would have taken off anyway we'll never know without the aid of a time machine. I was lucky enough to see him live when he was at his best, and the buzz in the arena when he was playing was something you rarely experience at a sporting event.

Not sure controversy is the word, just incredible sportsmanship and fair mindedness. Agree the ref was correct though. He should have invited Selby to look at it with the other ball in position.

That looked a freeball every day of the week!

Can't ever recall a similar situation and how Judd clipped the red on on his next escape attempt was unreal, albeit it took a few more visits to wrap the frame up.

Maybe there will be late night drama on the BBC!😱😵‍💫

I thought it looked like a free ball with the additional reference reds in place, but both of them were not quite touching their respective partner balls, which would have made a difference in the margins at play. Both players thought they could see the whole of the red.

Selby seemed to have gone off the boil but that cup of tea in the mid-session interval appears to have perked him up.
